'Eye of the Tiger' 한곡으로 세계적인 그룹으로 우뚝 선 미국의 성인 취향 팝록 그룹  Survivor는 키보드 주자인 '짐 페테릭'에 의해 1978년에 결성되었다.
그룹 결성 이후 시카고 지역의 작은 클럽을 무대로 활동을 시작하였으며 1979년에 데뷔 음반 'Survivor'를 발표하였다. 시카고 지역에서는 많은 인기를 얻으며 비교적 성공적인 데뷔를 장식하였다. 1981년에 두번째 음반 'Premonition'을 발표하였다.
두번째 음반에서 발매된 싱글 'Poor Man's Son'이 빌보드 싱글 차트 33위까지 오르며 서바이버의 첫번째 Top 40 진출 곡이 되었고 미전역에 서바이버의 음악이 알려지게 된다. 1982년, 영화 록키 3의 개봉을 앞두고 있던 배우 '실베스터 스탤론(Sylvester Stallone)'은 Poor Man's Son을 듣고 대단히 만족하여 서바이버에게 록키 3의 주제가를 의뢰하였으며 이를 수락한 서바이버는 'Eye of the Tiger'를 만들어 1982년 5월 29일 영화의 개봉에 맞추어 싱글로 발표하였다.

영화의 성공과 함께 주제가인 'Eye of the Tiger'는

빌보드 싱글 차트 정상에서 6주간이나 머무르는 엄청난 성공을 하였고

영국에서도 차트 정상을 차지하였다. 곧이어 발매된 세번째 음반 'Eye of the Tiger'에서 후속곡인 'American Heartbeat'를 연이어 히트시키며 서바이버는 세계적인 그룹으로 올라서게 된다. 서바이버의 대표곡이자 인상적이며 강력한 연주로 시작하는 'Eye of the Tiger'는 오랜 세월을 사랑받으며 영화와 함께 듣는 이에게 추억을 떠올려 주는 노래로 자리하고 있다.
